Book Reviews:
5.0 out of 5 stars The gold standard for sports nutrition, June 24, 2012
By John Doe - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase. This review is from: Advanced Sports Nutrition-2nd Edition (Paperback)This book is widely considered THE text on sports nutrition, and it's even better now that it is updated for 2012. Sports nutrition is a quickly advancing field and having the most recent information is important. Benardot covers very important information for athletes, including:
* Proper ratios of carbohydrates to proteins to fats, and how the body utilizes these nutrients.
* The effects of vitamins and minerals on performance, and how these micronutrients function.
* The best concentration of carbohydrates for sports drinks, gels, etc.
* Which supplements work and do not.
* How best to spread out nutrient intake across the day and before, during, and after activity.
* Specific recommendations for athletes of particular types of sports, such as short, high intensity sports or endurance sports.
All of the material is very well cited and most importantly, you gain not only an understanding of "what" but also "why". The author provides a tremendous amount of information on anatomy and biology to explain exactly how metabolic processes use the nutrients you consume so you can apply that information to your unique situation. This is a must-have book for any athlete.
Janet Goad Review: The Best Books on Fitness Nutrition.
1. Advanced Sports Nutrition by Dan Benardot
This encyclopedic reference is a go-to source that deals specifically with high performance athletes. It is based on current scientific nutritional research, explaining in clear, factual language the nutritional sources: carbohydrates, proteins, fat, vitamins, mineral, fluids and electolytes. Benardot discusses how factors such as travel, high altitude, gender and age, and body composition and weight also affect nutritional needs. The book outlines strategies for specific metabolic systems that will support high intensity bursts and power for sprinters, endurance for marathoners, and power as well as endurance for athletes such as skaters, basketball players, golfers, and tennis players. The final part of the book gives nutrition plans, recipes, and training schedules for specific sports that will guide meal plans for competitors in the weeks leading up to competition day,
List Price: $23.95. The author is a professor in human nutrition at Georgia State University and a licensed dietician. His nutritional expertise has supported Olympic gold-medalists and other national-level teams.
5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, some proper nutrition advice, 15 Mar 2012

(REAL NAME) Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)This review is from: Advanced Sports Nutrition: Second Edition (Kindle Edition)As an ageing boulderer (rock climber), gymnast and runner, I have been trying to reduce my weight and relatively increase my muscle mass for a while now, with some success. Much of my information has come from trawling blogs and online discussions from body builders, weight lifters, gymnasts and runners. According to Dan's book, I haven't been doing too badly, but there are some things I misunderstood and will now be able to improve upon. Reading the book was a breeze, in fact I felt like a sponge gleefully soaking up much needed water and went from cover to cover in 3 days. In short, my nutrient timing is not optimal - not eating enough before running, nor eating or drinking during running - I probably over-indulge on protein powder, don't eat enough and certainly don't drink enough. A great book, which at times became a bitter but necessary pill to swallow.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, 14 Mar 2012
By Rob - See all my reviewsThis review is from: Advanced Sports Nutrition-2nd Edition (Paperback)This is a really great book for professional and amateur alike. Covers all the basics as well as a good amount of detail, and is backed up by all the latest scientific research. It has changed the way I train and I only wish I'd read it years ago.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book !, 1 Jan 2012By Bobbi - Published on Amazon.comThis review is from: Advanced Sports Nutrition-2nd Edition (Paperback)I'm a middle-age female with a science background, and found this book both intellectually stimulating and full of practical tips. I'm trying to do everything within my means to stay in shape, and knowing the reason why I need to do something (nutritionally) actually motivates me more to do it, and this book explains the science is such an accessible way that it is a joy to read. I'm going to recommend this book to all of my friends.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Winner!, 31 Dec 2011 By Dr. Walt Thompson - Published on Amazon.comThis review is from: Advanced Sports Nutrition-2nd Edition (Paperback)Just when you thought that you had read the sports nutrition "Bible" (Dr. Benardot's first edition of this book), a second edition appears which is better than the first edition! This informative book is a MUST read for any and all sport enthusiasts who are looking for the cutting edge. Coaches, athletes, instructors of nutrition classes and anyone interested in learning more about nutrition and human performance will gain an edge after reading this book. I urge all of my colleagues and friends to buy this book and read through it carefully. It has advice and suggestions for just about everyone. Professors and colleagues, if you have been searching for that perfect book for a sports nutrition class, this is it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Information June 7, 2012 By Eric Davis This book contains a lot of information about nutrition and how certain nutrients and supplements act on the body. Provides a nice review of what supplements work and those that don't and which are a waste of money. That particular section was an eye opener for sure!
